Flowers from Friends is one of our favourite Highlands initiatives. Growers from our local area donate their flowers and foliage for funerals, and to gift to the bereaved.

It's a beautiful act of kindness and generosity for our community, and we are so grateful to everyone that contributes.

Bonnie from @abloomingobsession is a frequent donor to Flowers from Friends, and she came through with the goods when a call went out for lavender.

Shout out also to Jeanette @pazza2904 for her contribution this week, and to all our beautiful Flowers from Friends crew who have given so generously to strangers. It really warms our hearts!

What a great day at the Black Gully Festival in Armidale on Saturday!

We spent the day with our friends from The Natural Burial Project, and had the beautiful, handwoven community coffin by @dvinecreationscoffins on display. It’s always such a meaningful conversation starter, and so many people stopped by to share their thoughts and stories about all things end of life.

It was heartening to see people’s curiosity and enthusiasm for discussion and sharing in a relaxed, community space.

Thanks for having us Black Gully Festival! We were relieved the rain held off!

What a great day at the Black Gully Festival in Armidale on Saturday!

We spent the day with our friends from The Natural Burial Project, and had the beautiful, handwoven community coffin by @dvinecreationscoffins on display. It’s always such a meaningful conversation starter, and so many people stopped by to share their thoughts and stories about all things end of life.

It was heartening to see people’s curiosity and enthusiasm for discussion and sharing in a relaxed, community space.

On the weekend we held our first Life Stories Writing Workshop in Uralla.

Over two mornings we explored the value and importance of storytelling, the process of recording, transcribing and editing, as well as creative ways to enliven a Life Stories document.

We are always filled with such a deep sense of gratitude when we come together in the End-of-Life space. Thank you to all our participants who made this such a special workshop that was full of warmth, sharing and laughter!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Dying to Know Day event earlier this month. We were all recovering from the big snow event, and it felt good to come together as a community and share a moment of calm and connection.

Our speakers brought a diverse range of insights and stories about death and dying, and we deeply appreciate their contributions to the day.

A special thank you to the musicians! Wendy Brown for her beautiful harp playing, and to the wonderful Fijian men from our community for their generosity and glorious singing.

Meet Nicole Kinnaird, our Grief and Loss Specialist.

Since 1997, Nicole has worked therapeutically with people of all ages who are encountering a wide range of challenges. She has a specific interest and expertise in both group and individual therapeutic settings, focusing on those who have experienced trauma, grief, and loss.

Nicole holds a Bachelor of Social Work from Sydney University and a Diploma of Process Oriented Psychology through ANZPOP, and is an experienced Clinical Supervisor, supervising individuals and teams from different backgrounds. She is a trauma-informed counsellor and psychotherapist, trained yoga and meditation teacher, and over the years has completed additional training in a variety of body based and creative therapeutic modalities. Her clinical practice is based in Armidale, NSW.

We all share the universal human experiences of grief, loss, love and living…and Nicole believes that coming together around these themes can bring a deep sense of meaning and connection to ourselves, life, and one another.

We feel very fortunate to have Nicole join our team. She will be facilitating the first Grief Group starting in March, and has many wonderful ideas and offerings for our community in this space.

In her time off, you'll likely find Lauren in her beautiful garden, making compost or tending to her bees.

When the call went out for local growers and gardeners to be ongoing donors of flowers and foliage for the project, we were overwhelmed with the support we received. Our community is full of special people wanting to do kind things for others. How lucky we are to live here!

Flowers From Friends is a compassionate community initiative that provides the gift of flowers to people who are dying or recently bereaved, as well as those arranging funerals who may not have access to, or the financial means for floral tributes.

Thank you to everyone that's so enthusiastically joined the Flowers from Friends crew so far. Big hearted people are the best. 💐

The custom of Telling the Bees when someone dies originated from Celtic mythology where bees were believed to act as winged messengers between the physical and spiritual worlds, carrying the souls of the deceased and delivering messages to the afterlife. The practice spread across Europe and persisted into Victorian times where it became a ritual to inform the bees about significant life events such as births and deaths.

In the early days of dreaming about working in the end of life space, we talked about this tradition as we (Bec and I) are both beekeepers with Celtic blood in our veins.

It's a custom I've taken up with my bees. I let them know about deaths and all the important things happening in my life. Soon I'll be knocking gently on their hives and letting them know about the birth of our Highlands Community Hospice Service that launches early this year.

Much love from us and our bees on this first day of the New Year.

I missed you quietly today. So quietly that no one noticed.

I missed you as I climbed out of bed and as I brushed my teeth; when I waited at the lights on the drive into work and as I heard the rain outside my window.

I missed you as I ordered lunch and as I kicked off my shoes when I got home; as I switched off the lights and climbed into bed for the night.

I missed you without tears or noise or fanfare.

But oh how I felt it.

I felt it in the morning, at lunchtime, in the evening and at night. I felt it as I woke, as I waited, as I worked. I felt it at home, on the road, in the light, in the dark, in the rain.

I felt it in every one of those moments, each one sitting heavier and heavier as the weight of me missing you kept growing and growing.

Yes, I missed you so quietly today.

But I felt it so loudly.

Patsy Asch will be showing a 30 minute video she made of a cremation in Bali. The video illustrates a very different approach to handling the dead than most Western practices.

The video will be followed by an open discussion over tea, coffee and light snacks. Everyone is welcome, whether or not you have attended a Death café.

The Last Aid - Care for the Dying at Home Workshop ran over two full days on the 16th & 17th of November.

Facilitated by Lyn and Kirsten from Amitayus Home Hospice Service, the workshop was full of learning, conversation, reflection and connection.

We feel very grateful to have had Kirsten and Lyn travel from the northern rivers to share their program, and also to the beautiful group of participants who attended.

Thank you also to the Uralla Council for the great venue at the Courthouse. Full of flowers and warm hearted women, it was a lovely space to be!

Many of us would prefer to die in the comfort and familiar surrounds of our own homes.
Not everyone will have that choice for any number of reasons – sometimes this isn't possible because there is just not enough support. “It takes a village to die at home”.

The Highlands End-of-Life Project team are currently working towards establishing the Highlands Community Hospice Service for the New England area. This service will have trained volunteers that support individuals wishing to die at home (or stay at home as long as possible) and their caring community.
Expressions of interest for volunteers will soon be open. Keep an eye on our social media and website for details.

The Highlands End-of-Life Project team are currently working towards establishing the Highlands Community Hospice Service for the New England area. This service will have trained volunteers that support individuals wishing to die at home (or stay at home as long as possible) and their caring community.
Expressions of interest for volunteers will soon be open. Keep an eye on our social media and website for details.

Earlier this month we held a workshop that explored the practical and legal considerations for caring for a body after death, home vigils and shrouding techniques. It was a warm, gentle and heartfelt morning of learning and sharing. We are very grateful for those that came along and we look forward to running this workshop again later in the year.

Donations from the workshop kicked off our fundraising efforts for a community cold plate.

Julia’s younger sister Cheryle died last year in September from metastatic breast cancer at the age of sixty six. She died at home, surrounded by her loved ones, which is what she had hoped for.

Having not been present for the deaths of her mother, father or brother, Julia describes the experience of being with her sister during her last weeks of life as a gift.

Thanks to Julia and Cheryle’s immediate family, Steve, Olivia and Matt for their willingness to share this story.
