About the event
Last Aid – Care for the Dying at Home is a two-day workshop designed to help people to be better equipped as a carer for someone who is dying.
Participants will gain insights into a broad range of topics, including some practical skills such as non-medical methods to enhance comfort and wellbeing. The workshop explores what is required to care for a dying person at home, the caregiver's role and duty of care, essential non-verbal and verbal communication skills, personal boundaries, spiritual care and grief and loss.
Simple mental health and well-being strategies are shared to help caregivers build resilience in their roles. Last Aid provides an overview of local support services available for those caring for someone at home. Participants will also learn about foundational planning topics, including funerals, wills, advance care directives, and other relevant end of life planning documents and matters.
While the Last Aid workshop will provide the knowledge and skills to participants to be able to support their dying person at home, these tools are also transferable to assist someone in a hospital or an aged care setting.
Last Aid is open to the community and interested participants who attend may be invited to apply to join the Highlands Community Hospice Service Volunteer training program which will run in February 2025.
